Jag kollade upp detta i Astronomiguiden.

"Röda Rektangeln ligger cirka 2300 ljusår bort i konstellationen Monoceros. Stjärnan i mitten tros ha varit av samma typ som solen men för cirka 14000 år sedan så började det yttre höljet kastas ut. Det skapade den nebulosa vi ser idag."
